To submit a photograph to the Vietnam War Memorial Website for use on this site, in Vietnam War Memorial Dedication promotional materials and to include it in the Vietnam War Memorial Veterans' Book, and for use by the State of South Dakota and the South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial Dedication Committee, please read the following terms and conditions below, and then follow the instructions to submit your photographs.

PLEASE NOTE:  The State of South Dakota and the authors of the Vietnam War Memorial Veterans' Book are the sole determinants of what materials are included on the website and in the printed book. While we would like to use all the pictures provided, it's simply not possible.  Space limitations, quality of photographs, and how the photo uniquely illustrates life for the South Dakota soldier serving in Vietnam are some of the factors that will be considered in determining what photos are to be used.

How to submit a photograph:

To provide a photo for use in the book or website, this website is the primary source for all photographs. All submitters by computer should adhere to the following guidelines:

By Computer:

1. Photos should be provided in a JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif), PNG (.png), or a TIFF (.tif) image format ONLY. 
2. When scanned, photographs should be scanned at a minimum of 300 dpi  resolution, and a maximum of 1200 dpi.  Photos scanned at a lesser resolution are un-useable for publication.
3. Photographic scans taken from a magazine or newspaper are generally not appropriate for use.  Scanning photos from books, magazines and newspapers often results in an unsightly interference pattern called "moire" which makes the photo inappropriate for reproduction.
4. When submitting your photograph, please make sure the photo has a unique name so we may match your photo to your information if needed. Please name your photographic file with your name and a photo number in a format of Last name, first name, middle initial and a number.

   EXAMPLE: If your name is "John M. Jones" name your photo in the following format:

   jonesjohnm1.jpg

By Mail:

1. Black and white or colored photographs may be submitted by mail to:

   Pierre, SD 57501-5070

2. DO NOT SEND ONE-OF-A-KIND OR ORIGINAL. PHOTOS - PHOTOS WILL NOT BE RETURNED.
3. Please do not send more than three photos.
4. Be advised that your local photo shop can make you a high quality photo replica. We will not accept photocopies or inkjet reproductions. When sending photos, place your full name and address on the back of each photo. Photos without names and addresses will not be used.

General Rules:

1. All photos and veterans' stories will be submitted to the South Dakota State Archives for display and historical reference.
2. Photos originally appearing in publications may be the property of someone else, and not subject to use because of copyright restrictions. You must have ownership and reproduction rights of the photos you submit.
3. The State of South Dakota reserves the right to edit and alter photographs for use in the Vietnam War Memorial materials.
